First Aid

This unit standard is for employees, to enable them to provide primary emergency care (first aid) in response to an occupational risk induced or any health emergency in their specific workplaces.

This training programme has been developed in accordance with the Skills Development Act, against a South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) registered unit standard. Only a facilitator who has been properly trained and is competent in the presentation of this course content and methodology should present this training. CPME provides accredited facilitators for First Aid Training.

Who is the training programme for?

This training programme is designed for both novice and experienced learners who may be expected to carry out basic first aid in the workplace while performing their daily duties.

It also makes good business sense that employees who are expected to supervise these related activities should know what the correct procedures are so that they are competent to identify good, bad, safe or unsafe practices during the course of their supervision day / shift.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment will be done to specified standards in line with the unit standard for assessment “Conduct Outcomes Based Assessment”, by a registered assessor and certificates will be issued to learners who demonstrate competence to the required standard.

Throughout the training it is essential that the practical skills be assessed to ensure that the learners are achieving the outcomes.

Much of the practical aspects of the course should comprise exercises, which are based on the type of task expected of the learner after training.

The training programme modules conclude with an activity which allows the learners to familiarise themselves with, and practice the skills associated with the Learner Outcomes of the Module.

These activities will be assessed (Formative Assessments) by the Facilitator, permitting them to evaluate the progress of the learners before proceeding with the following Modules.

Learners will be assessed objectively, and all results and remarks recorded.

This method of assessment will allow remedial action to be taken when appropriate. It also provides the learner with feedback of his or her performance.

QUALIFYING FIRST AIDERS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Demonstrate the principles of primary emergency care.
  • Assess and control a single injury emergency scene in the workplace.
  • Demonstrate primary emergency life support for adults, children and infants.
  • Explain and manage shock.
  • Carry out secondary assessment of the sick or injured person and provide appropriate primary emergency care at the scene.
  • Keep records of the incident/accident.
